4 Scenarios When You Should Definitely Fold

play Six Plus better
Sometimes people perceive players who fold a lot at the tables to be weak. Cowardly. Afraid to take risks. But we're here to tell you that we don't agree with that. At all. In fact, we're here to tell you that there are so many good reasons to fold during a game of poker. And it's not just if you're going through a bout of stinking bad luck. So find out how not playing hands can, in fact, improve your chances of making money in the long run.

What are the main reasons to fold in poker?

There are many reasons to fold in poker, so we're going to just take you through a few. Some of them you might not've thought about, while some of obvious. But all of them are good to keep in the back of your mind during your next poker session.

1. You've got a feeling…

Some players rely on intuition when they play. While that's good to a certain extent in some circumstances, to use “feelings” as your overarching strategy doesn't make a whole lot of sense. So the next time you have a low to middle strength hand and you just think you should hold on to it “just in case”, chances are the right move is to fold it. And that's especially the case if you got stung by folding a weak hand pre-flop only to be confronted with the freak occurrence of a flop that would've resulted in an unbeatable hand. In cases like that, players get a lot of “feelings” that, to be honest, it pays to ignore.

2. Fight through the boredom

Maybe you've been playing a game and you've barely got a chance to play any hands. You're waiting for the strong ones but they just never come. Even when you're in blind position, your opponents seem to start betting big and follow suit just doesn't make sense with your mediocre hands. We get that, it can be tough to keep yourself out of the action. But fight the boredom and wait for a decent hand. Or else, you'll end up paying for it in the long run.

3. You're going through a winning streak

Maybe the opposite it true. You've had incredible luck with your hands during your poker session. You're way ahead of the possé as chip leader and you feel like no one can take you down. So when you get dealt a crappy hand, you say to yourself, “I can make this work to my advantage”. Even if the hand is so-so, you're exceptional luck can see you through. But no, that's fool-hardy to say the least. When winning players get cocky like that, they can turn into losers pretty damn fast. Don't suffer from winners bad luck. Make sure you retain your discipline and fold when you need to.

4. It's your lucky hand

Some players swear by “lucky hands” but here at Bonus Code Poker, we don't believe they exist. Call us skeptics but we think players who rely on “lucky hands” rarely end up as successful players. Have you ever noticed how lucky hands always seem to be mid-strength at best? Ugh, we don't like this excuse to try to introduce a quirk into your game. Unless your lucky hand is AA, there's probably a good chance you're going to need to fold it.
