What happened during High Stakes Duel III – Hellmuth vs Dwan – on Wednesday?

Round 3 of the High Stakes Duel III between Phil Hellmuth and Tom Dwan kicked off at 7 PM ET on Wednesday.

Hellmuth started off the match with a small lead as he mixed it up in the early stages, which included an impressive fold by Hellmuth.

It then went back and forth until Dwan lost a big hand with Hellmuth beating him with 74o against his pocket tens. The hand gave Hellmuth a 3 to 1 chip lead, which he extended after turning pocket nines into a straight against Dwan’s ace-high giving Hellmuth a more than 4 to 1 chip lead.

During the final hand, Hellmuth was dealt AK with Dwan holding pocket eights. Hellmuth went all-in before Dwan called. After a king hit on the flop, the rest of the hand were of no help at Dwan, cementing the victory for Hellmuth, who was gracious in victory.

“It feels good. Tom is just one of the greatest players in the world. I like to use the term ‘natural-born hold’em player.’ I think there are about 10 natural-born hold’em players in the world. I’m one of the 10, for sure. What do I have, 13 world championships in hold’em or something? Plus, 50 final tables in hold’em. So yeah, I’m one of them.”

Initially, Dwan did not confirm that he would ask for a rematch although Hellmuth was confident that he would. “I know you’re rematching. This time for $800k.” Just hours later it was confirmed that he would be doing just that.
