Another one bites the dust. Phil Hellmuth defeated yet another challenger during the High Stakes Duel on Wednesday. His latest victory comes against Fox Sport 1's Nick Wright during Round 1 of High Stakes Duel III.
The event was once again held at the PokerGo Studios at the ARIA Resort and Casino over the course of six hours.
Each player put up a $50,000 buy-in before the heads-up event. As he has during other matches, Hellmuth started out slow but finished out strong to claim the victory and the $100,000 prize. Although Hellmuth did clinch the victory, the session did have a signature Hellmuth meltdown — complete with 18 f-bombs — during the match after losing a hand against Wright. After losing during the hand, Hellmuth called it a “mockery of poker.”
Wright, an unknown poker player, said he enjoyed the majority of the match. โIt was exceptional except for the last 90 seconds. That sucked, but it was great.โ
The victory follows sweeps against poker greats Antonio Esfandiari and Daniel Negreanu. After defeating Wright, Hellmuth now sits at 7-0 in these matches, having won a total of $750,000. The winnings include $350,000 paydays from Esfandiari and Negreanu — who Heallmuth each beat 3-0 — and now $50,000 from Wright.
The next move of the Hellmuth vs Wright High Stakes Duel match lies in the hands of Nick Wright. He has the option to request a rematch from Hellmuth, where the stakes would double to $100,000. Wright will have 72 hours from the end of the match to decide if he would like to continue.
It is unknown whether Wright will request a rematch, but Hellmuth is a near-certainty to accept should he do so. After the match, Wright hinted that the decision to play Hellmuth could go either way. “I got 72 hours, right? I am going to need 71 of them.”
โMaybe Iโll be back to challenge Phil, I gotta think about it. You know, thereโs a lot that goes into it. I donโt think I embarrassed myself. I donโt think I played bad. Phil deserves it. Thatโs seven in a row in this setup. Heโs great.”
Hellmuth vs Wright was streamed live from the ARIA Resort and Casino on PokerGo. To watch the event in its entirety, poker fans need a PokerGo subscription, which is available for $14.99 monthly or $99.99 per year.
