Treat yourself to a little eye candy in the form of one of these fantastic poker movies. Poker is a uniquely interesting game, marrying luck and smarts and personality. Not that we’re biased or anything. So it’s no wonder that poker movies can be so gripping and entertaining.

Find one to suit your mood tonight. Get the popcorn in, poker movies are the order of the day!

In an old-school kind of mood?

The Cincinnati Kid is definitely one of the best poker movies around. It’s a 1965 drama starring none other than Steve McQueen. And we could end this brief summary right there, because that’s basically guaranteeing how good it is.

But we won’t because maybe you would like a tiny bit more context. Anyway, this is the tale of a young man who wants to make his name on the poker scene during the Depression. Follow him as he tries to beat the local card shark in pure McQueen style.

In the mood for a true story?

Released in 2017, Molly’s Game is based on the real life story of Molly Bloom. This is all about how Bloom rose to become a major player in the high-rolling poker word, hosting games for billionaires, celebrities and even criminals.

Starring Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba and Michael Cera, this film tracks the rise of Bloom’s career and also the fall when the FBI shut her down in spectacular fashion. So if you’re in the humor to learn a little more about a different side of the poker industry, this is an interesting watch for sure.

In the mood for a 1990s cult classic?

Very few people who are into poker have missed Rounders. Despite it’s solid cult status in the poker world and its cast of rising stars (Edward Norton and Matt Damon), it didn’t actually make a big splash at the box office.

But it’s for sure stuck around in the poker world. If you haven’t watched it, this is a movie that follows Norton and Damon on their mission to pay off a huge debt by doing the rounds at several high stakes games. It even has a special guest appearance by poker icon and 10-WSOP bracelet winner Johnny Chan.

In the mood for cheese?

Now we’re not talking about cheese as a snack for your poker movies session, although that could be nice too. We’re talking about a kind of cheesy movie. Kenny Rogers as The Gambler was a straight to TV movie about a man who’s trying to make it in professional poker and another who’s on a mission to rescue his son.

The film takes place for the most part on the train journey and is a lot of fun. Don’t expect Oscar-worthy acting. But do expect a romp all the way from Arizona to Texas.
